Pic du Gar F/PE-133: A Local Favorite with Striking Cliffs
The Pic du Gar is one of my home summits, along with the nearby Pic de Cagire. It’s a straightforward hike accessible from Bézins-Garraux or Juzet d’Izaut (La Couage). Both trails are well-marked, leading you through a mix of forest and open terrain before reaching the summit. One of the standout features of the Pic du Gar is its striking cliffs, which are hard to miss as you approach. They give the mountain a distinctive look and make the climb feel even more rewarding. From the top, at 1,785 meters, you get great views of the Pyrenean range and the valleys below. I come here often because it’s close to home and offers just the right balance of effort and reward. The cliffs and scenery make it a memorable hike without taking all day. If you’re in the area, it’s a solid choice for a day in the mountains.
A Challenging Radio Activation, 2024
This activation was tough, with only five QSOs logged. The bands were in terrible shape, and it didn’t take long to realize why—a solar flare had disrupted propagation. Despite calling on multiple frequencies, the conditions made it nearly impossible to establish reliable contacts. That’s part of the challenge of radio. Even on days like this, there’s still satisfaction in making any contacts at all and learning to adapt to the unpredictable nature of the hobby.
